Sic Semper Tyrannis, as they say. Vince Vaughn suggests Americans need the 2nd Amdt to protect ourselves from abuses of government power. The Revolutionary Fathers* certainly agreed that a right to bear arms was not solely justified for the English Government Forces of King George III.
To suggest only the government and criminals effectively be armed today (by restricting law abiding gun owners from possession) would be a repudiation of the Declaration of Independence from Britain & abrogation of the American federal Constitution of limited government itself. Of course, in the historical sense, the American Revolution would never have happened without guns and in the present sense, we would not have a revolutionary self-government limited in its scope without the reciprocity of an armed constituency.

*Revolutionary Fathers. The Federalists’ (mainly Alexander Hamilton pushing for European national aka central banking aka the Federal Reserve, abetted by wordsmiths Jon Jay and James Madison as well as farmer law philosopher Thomas Jefferson and General George Washington) central overlay was a Masonic coup and a separate issue from the independence movement per se.
